Situated on the Cambrian Coast of West Wales, New Quay started with just a
few cottages in the late 1790. It wasn't until the early to mid 1800’s that boat
building started around what is the harbour today and the village started to grow.
Another main feature in those early day’s was the small fleet of fishing boat’s
catching Herring, Sprat’s, Mackerel, Crab and Lobster, all that remains today
of this fishing fleet are five small fishing boats. Around the early part of the
20th centry a proposal was put forward to build a light railway to
New Quay from the Lampeter to Aberaeron branch coming off the branch at
Ciliau Aeron near Aberaeron, this never went beyond the proposal stage.
New Quay did have a small tramway (1860) which worked from New Quay Head
to New Quay pier helping to bring stone down from the quary to build the pier.
Today New Quay’s main industry is its tourism having good accommodation
facilities with Hotels, Guest Houses, Self-catering, touring Caravan Parks
and B&B’s. With scenic views out across Cardigan Bay towards Snowdonia
and with the coastal footpaths along the Marine Heritage Coast, which is noted
for its marine wildlife and West Wales Bottlenose Dolphins. |
