Situated on the Cambrian Coast of West Wales, New Quay started with just a few cottages in the late 1790s. It wasn't until the early to mid 1800s that boat
building started around what is today's harbour and the village started to grow.
Another main feature in those early days was the small fleet of fishing boats catching Herring, Sprats, Mackerel, Crab and Lobster. All that remains today of our
fishing fleet are five small fishing boats.
In the early part of the 20th century a proposal was put forward to build a light railway to New Quay from the Lampeter to Aberaeron branch line coming off the
branch at Ciliau Aeron near Aberaeron. This never went beyond the proposal stage.
New Quay did have a small tramway (1860) which ran from New Quay Head (Rock Street) to New Quay pier helping to bring stone down from the quarry to build
the pier. The remains of this quarry railway is now buried deep under the road outside the tourist information centre.
New Quay’s main industry now is its tourism, having good accommodation facilities with Hotels, Guest Houses, Self-catering, touring Caravan Parks and B&Bs.
With scenic views out across Cardigan Bay towards Snowdonia and with the coastal footpaths along the Marine Heritage Coast which is noted for its abundance
of marine wildlife, not forgetting our family of Bottlenose Dolphins that visit us throughout the year. |
