Old Boathouse
The second boathouse was constructed in
1904 replacing the old one at the top of the
harbour slip. Date of this picture is
between 1910-1920.

Frederick Shaylor (right), New Quay
coxswain from 1918-1935. This is our
coxswain's Gt.Gt. grand-daddy....got the
same slipper line Potter.

The Launch
Launching of the William Cantrell Ashley.
Look at the wheels, the large plates on the wheels
was to prevent the carriage sinking into the sand.
The date of this picture is unknown.
Cantrell Ashley
William Cantrell Ashley on the slip.To crew the
William Cantrell Ashley you had 10 men, 8 on
the oars, a lookout and coxswain....iron men and
wooden ship's, couldn't see that happening now day's.
Two oars from the Cantrell are still on station.

Some interesting reading.... Mr. E.M.Lewis, New Quay Lifeboat coxswain for the years 1875-80
was dismissed from the service with the RNLI. The story goes, the lifeboat was call out to go to
the assistance of the Barque "Pacific" out of Swansea which had got itself into a dangerous
position in Cardigan Bay in a rough westerly. Having saved the ship and her cargo
Coxswain Lewis and the crew claimed salvage, as they were entitled to in those days and
received £325. They refused to pay the customary two-thirds to the RNLI for use of the lifeboat.
The matter was resolved, coxswain Lewis got his marching orders and dismissed from the service

Under Sail
The William Cantrell Ashley(above) was the last sailing
lifeboat in service with the RNLI. She departed New Quay
on the 25th February 1949 for the very last time to go
to it's new home just up the coast from here
...Aberdovey.
On the 3rd May 1949 with 12 officers and cadets
on board she got into difficulties on the Dovey Bar, once rescued
she was towed back to Aberdovey... what a come down.
W.C.Ashley Leaving
The William Cantrell Ashley (above) leaving New Quay
for the very last time on the 25th February 1949.
She was bound for her new home at the Aberdovey
Outward Bound School. She was the last sailing
lifeboat to be in service with the RNLI.

Frank & Marion
The picture(left) date's back to the latter part of the 1800's
and is of the Frank and Marion (1886 -1907).
It show's the shore and boat crew recovering the
lifeboat up the harbour slip. I count sixteen in and
around the lifeboat, now that's a good turnout....

Boathouse 1864-1904
The Picture above was the first Lifeboat Station, dating back to
the early 1800's. Originally a mortuary before being converted
to a boat house, now a shelter and toilet block. Going by some of the
smells in there some days I think they left a body in there!

This was the old New Quay tractor that was found
recently about 9 miles from New Quay. It was sold
in 1992 to a local man who hoped to restore it,
now owned by a local scrap yard...what a come down.
