The "Mersey Class" ALB was first introduced into service with the RNLI
in 1988 as a fast carrage launch lifeboat, which can be adapted for
slipway launching or lay afloat.

The Frank and Lena Clifford came to New Quay as new on
8th April 1992 she was number 15 of her class to be placed
in service with the RNLI.

Built of reinforced composite the Mersey has a overall length of 11.58m,
beam 3.81m and a displacement of 14tons. The power comes from twin
CAT3208T diesels giving a top cruising speed of 16 knots(20mph) and a
range of 162.5 nautical miles. Duration at sea is 10.6 hours, fuel
239.5 gallons being held in twin tanks, the steering is all hydraulic.

There are two steering position, one aft and one in the boxy like water tight wheelhouse. Navigational aids are, JRC Radar which has just been
updated from the old Decca Radar, VHF(MW) radio, this covers
a longer range, VHF radio telephone, directional finding unit,
GPS (ground position satellite), depth sounder and most
important..the tea pot.

First aid equipment is carried and crews are
trained in basic first aid skill's and life saving, one
of the crew of our boat is a paramedic. The "Mersey Class"
has a crew of six while at sea also a doctor and paramedic
can also be accommodated all being seated with belts, it
can accommodate up to 38 survivors ten of these
in the forward survivors cabin.

Crew's of all lifeboats are highly trained in all
aspects of navigation and seamanship, regular refresher
coarse's are taking place throughout the year at their
stations or at the RNLI establishment at Poole Dorset.
Exercises are taken at regular intervals throughoutt the year except in badweather conditions
.
