This page shows details of all lifeboats stationed at New Quay since 1864 until the present lifeboat. A more detailed account will be published at a later date of all ALB and ILB services from New Quay; this is a big project and will take time to complete.

"Forester" 1864 - 1886 ( renamed in 1872 to "Nelson".

Present by the Ancient Order of Foresters. Under the "Forester" the boat was launched 4 times. Under the name "Nelson" it was launched 6 times saving 5 lives. One rescue was for the Brigantine Albert in 1884.

 

"Frank and Marion" 1886 - 1907 Self righting.

A gift of Mr & Mrs Francis G Smart of Tunbridge Wells Kent. Cost of the boat was £373, the lifeboat was launched 17 times saving 19 lives.

 

Liverpool Class "William Cantrell Ashley" 1907 - 1948.

A legacy of Mr Charles Carr Ashley of Mentone France the boat cost £961. Being launched 18 times saving 10 lives. On retiring the lifeboat was the last sailing lifeboat in service with the RNLI. Sold to the outward bound school Aberdovey, on the 23rd March 1949 she got into difficulties on the Dovey Bar with twelve cadets and officers.

 

Liverpool Class ( motor)"Saint Alban's" 1948 - 1970.

Saint Alban's was the first motor lifeboat to be used at New Quay, a gift from the City of St Alban's and costing £9,836, Launched 66 times and saving 78 lives.

During this period two other lifeboats were placed on station, names unknown at this time.

 

Oakley Class "Birds Eye" 1970 - 1990.

The Birds Eye was presented to the RNLI by Birds Eye Foods Ltd at a cost of £39,500. Launching 90 times and saving 42 lives. Two temporary lifeboats were station during this time names as yet but one of them was launched just the once.

 

Oakley Class "Calouste Gulbenkian" 1990 - 1991.

The Calouste Gulbenkian was provided by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation Lisbon. Being launched six times, at the moment no details available on many lives were saved.

 

Oakley Class "Fairlight" 1991 - 1992.

Legacies bequeathed by Mrs K E Wood of Cranbrook Kent and Mrs F M Dudman of Fareham. The Fairlight was launched just three times here. Previously stationed at Hastings and St Ives she rescued 155 lives.. busy girl.
